Rosebud #388

My daughter was so moved by Leonardo DiCaprio’s performance in What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, that she believes that Leonardo DiCaprio the man, in real life, is mentally handicapped. She refuses to be dissuaded. On Halloween night, we encountered a sweet girl with Down’s Syndrome who was dressed as Bindi, the Jungle Girl. We shared some candy and Bindi wanted to give me a hug. “She’s just like Leonardo DiCaprio,” my daughter whispered as we continued on trick or treating. “You have to treat people like that very gently.” I’ve tried to tell her a bunch of times that Leonardo DiCaprio, the man, was just playing a role, that actors aren’t always the same as the characters they play. But she continues to be overwhelmed by the power of his performance. “You can’t be scared of people like Leonardo DiCaprio,” she says. “They don’t mean to be that way.”
