Rosebud #384
One of my favorite movies was on TCM last night, Larceny, Inc. (1942), with Edward G. Robinson and a bunch of other great tough guys. The screenplay was written by the inimitable S.J. Perleman (and the premise was borrowed by Woody Allen, a conspicuous Perelman fan, for his somewhat less successful Small Time Crooks). Some ex-cons pretend to run a luggage store next door to a bank while they dig a hole in the back room, trying to tunnel through to the bank's vault. Watch some great clips here. The best is Robinson—who was as good at doing comedy as gangster flicks—impatiently wrapping some merchandise for a pesky customer. "Do you sell luggage here?" "No, we just keep it around for laughs."
