Rosebud #19

An Informal, but Super-Serious Poll

In 1998 Bill Clinton was impeached for receiving a blowjob from Monica Lewinsky, and then lying about it to the American people and Congress.

By the standards of the Republicans who pursued the impeachment, if any of the following offenses seem equal to a blowjob—or, more gravely, lying about a blowjob—then shouldn’t they also be calling for the impeachment of President George W. Bush?

Worse than a blowjob (or lying about a blowjob)?:

—Failing to act on intelligence about 9/11 from 14 countries (see the Presidential Daily Briefing from August 6, 2001, “Bin Laden Determined to Attack Inside U.S.”)
—Ordering former EPA chief Christie Todd Whitman to lie about the safety of the air quality at Ground Zero and in downtown Manhattan, post-911.
—Failing to warn the citizens of New Orleans about Hurricane Katrina.
—Failing to rescue the citizens of New Orleans from Hurricane Katrina, during which 1,836 people died.
—Failing to clear or rebuild the neighborhoods of New Orleans, more than one year later.
—Lying about Iraq having weapons of mass destruction.
—Lying about Saddam Hussein having links to Al Qaeda.
—Failing to apprehend Osama bin Laden (and shutting down the CIA’s special unit that was looking for him).
—Invading two nations without provocation.
—Losing thousands of American soldiers to wars without provocation.
—Having no “exit strategy” for these wars.
—Killing tens of thousands of Afghani and Iraqi civilians.
—Causing the Arab world to ignite with hatred for the United States.
—Causing the world at large to determine that the greatest threat to the world is the United States.
—Arresting and/or deporting thousands on the basis of false information; unilaterally suspending their right to habeus corpus.
—Torturing prisoners.
—Spying on American citizens.
—Causing the greatest job loss since the Great Depression, while claiming the economy is booming.
—Causing the crash of the formerly robust U.S. economy; running a multi-hundred-billion-dollar deficit due to massive government spending.
—Continually using the country’s gay population as a way to distract voters from the failures of the presidency.
—Continually fomenting terror by warning of an imminent terrorist attack (although there has not been one in more than five years, and never before Bush was president).
—Cutting spending on education, health care, and most social services, while driving the Pentagon budget up to over $400 billion.
—Rolling back environmental protections that go back more than 30 years, arguably leading to the acceleration of global warming.
—Giving former business cronies billions of dollars in contracts without competitive bidding; doing nothing when these cronies grossly exaggerate costs.
—Fixing the 2000 election. And probably the 2004 one (see Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.'s account in Rolling Stone).
