SWIPED: HOOKING UP IN THE DIGITAL AGE

Nancy Jo Sales is the director of SWIPED: HOOKING UP IN THE DIGITAL AGE, a documentary film that explores the unprecedented impact of technology on dating and courtship. Following young people in four cities, talking to experts as well as the heads of some of the leading dating apps, Swiped examines the interference of technology in our ability to form true and lasting connections. An impressionistic snapshot of dating today, Swiped is also an investigation into the misogyny and rape culture of online dating as seen in the spread of unsolicited graphic images, harassing messages, and sexual assault, as well as the racism and transphobia experienced by people of color and trans people when dating online, all of which Big Dating does little or nothing to address. Watch SWIPED on all HBO platforms or Amazon Prime Video.

Reviews

“The first thing that jumps out about “Swiped” is how gifted an interviewer Sales is. Much of the doc revolves around interviews with 18 to 25-year-olds who talk about their experiences using various dating apps. Sales said she wanted broad representation of diverse voices and she certainly succeeds. The interviews veer from sweet to sad to mildly sociopathic — but their defining quality is candor, which is a testament to Sales’ technique.” — Business Insider

“The most unsettling aspect of ‘Swiped,’ as the experts note, is that because society is at such a nascent stage of this phenomenon, it’s not as yet clear precisely where these forces will lead—and whether those responsible have simply brought another shiny new wrinkle into the process of pairing up or, more unnervingly, opened Pandora’s box.” — CNN

“’Swiped’ is a very good film with a very simple message: the technology may have changed and convoluted things, but the learning curve of romance is about the same: it’s complicated.” — Book and Film Globe
