SWIPED: HOOKING UP IN THE DIGITAL AGE
Available on all HBO platforms.

Nancy Jo Sales is the director of SWIPED, a documentary film which explores the unprecedented impact of technology on the way we date. SWIPED examines the effect of online dating on our view of gender roles and on our ability to find true and lasting connections. At the heart of SWIPED are six young people, ages 18 to 29, of diverse backgrounds, in four cities across America (Austin, Texas; New York City; Santa Cruz, California; and Plainfield, Illinois) as they search for love, sex and romance through dating apps and other online platforms. SWIPED follows these characters as they talk about their experiences, opening up about their expectations and insecurities in the world of digital dating. SWIPED also features interviews with experts, academics and the heads of some the leading dating apps, including Bumble, Hinge and Tinder.

Reviews

“The first thing that jumps out about “Swiped” is how gifted an interviewer Sales is. Much of the doc revolves around interviews with 18 to 25-year-olds who talk about their experiences using various dating apps. Sales said she wanted broad representation of diverse voices and she certainly succeeds. The interviews veer from sweet to sad to mildly sociopathic — but their defining quality is candor, which is a testament to Sales’ technique.” — Business Insider

“The most unsettling aspect of ‘Swiped,’ as the experts note, is that because society is at such a nascent stage of this phenomenon, it’s not as yet clear precisely where these forces will lead—and whether those responsible have simply brought another shiny new wrinkle into the process of pairing up or, more unnervingly, opened Pandora’s box.” — CNN

“’Swiped’ is a very good film with a very simple message: the technology may have changed and convoluted things, but the learning curve of romance is about the same: it’s complicated.” — Book and Film Globe
